DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY: Four cornerstones and three key principles. The following is excerpted from Doing Business God’s Way, in which author Santiago Rivera teaches business owners how to allow their connection with God to help them achieve their entrepreneurial goals. Business people walking toward light - Doing business God's way

DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY

The four cornerstones

Doing business God’s way includes four cornerstones that will help you move into the light of universal laws, which must happen before we begin the entrepreneurial work of creating a business or expanding an established business.

The first cornerstone is the utilization of the Bible as the learning tool for God’s principles to create, expand and maintain any business on this Earth. With the Bible, we acquire the natural power within us to develop the bright light God gives us into success, prosperity and love.

As God reveals in detail His principles to you, a traditional business plan must follow to maintain the business idea.

Remember, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” With this phrase, God empowers and allows you to comply with the forces of traditional business methods, using His principles to control the success of your destiny and the overall success of the Kingdom.

The second cornerstone recognizes and accepts that it is all about Him, and for Him.

To state it simply, our mundane ways of doing business do not work for us. During the application of the second cornerstone, you will be rewarded with power from God.

The ideas created by our ego and extenuated business plans that we make on our own will not lead us to the place of blessing, where we will have an abundant life in glory. God never intended for us to be able to “handle” life on our own, but designed it in such a way that we must depend on Him.

Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts shall be established. The Lord has made all for Himself, yes, even the wicked for the day of doom.

(Proverbs 16:3-4 NKJV)

DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY

Doing business for Him is the most open yet hidden secret on the Earth of doing business God’s way. God’s blessings are a supernatural empowerment of His goodness and love for you. He wants to take you to another level of grace, love, abundance and success.

When we do any business for Him, He will outdo himself every time, as He is revealing the ideas, and giving us the tools, talents, abilities and resources needed to receive abundance from Heaven.

Our Creator is amazing. He wants us to live in the fullness of the blessing. He anointed our head with the holy oil and made our cup run over to bless others.

As you receive a direct connection with God, He will move you forward from barely making it in business to having more than enough. He will present and open doors in a supernatural way. He will position your name with the right people, in the right places and at the right time.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

(Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV)

The power that works in us is our desire to connect with Him, do business for Him and with Him.

The third cornerstone recognizes that God does not play games.

He never wants to deal with false promises, sin or misplaced priorities. He knows you from the end to the beginning.

God does not allow for negotiating. When we follow His ways, we live an abundant, successful and blessed life.

To apply this in practical business terms, look into your heart and recall the deeper business dream. Think of all we would expect to do upon opening a business. There are hundreds of logistic details that need to be decided on before the doors open.

It is always wise to get advice from the Creator of all, a God who has experience and fulfills promises. In this third cornerstone, you will have acquired power from your environment.

To complete the equation for success in business, the last cornerstone is your trust in Him.

Your trust requires you to believe in Him and follow Him. As you believe in His promises, you will be able to follow his business practices, and your soul will create a bond of trust.

Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.

(Jeremiah 17:5-6 NKJV)

Sadly, as problems arise, more trust is placed in society’s systems and technologies rather than God, and that leads to disappointment and loss of finance, family, friends and even the business itself. Trust means to believe in and rely on, regardless of the situations that arise—business-wise or personally.

We cannot say we believe in God, yet refuse to accept and embrace his principles that will bring change and reformation.

The Bible says, “Is there anything too hard for the Lord?” There is no limit to what God can and will do if you dare to believe in Him.

Give God your unconditional trust and faith to work with Him.

DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY

DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY

The three principles

As we focus on all the cornerstones of doing business God’s way, and bring them together, let’s look at 1 Corinthians 1:27.

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.

(1 Corinthians 1:27 NKJV)

This means the way God does things will sound totally foreign to all of us because His ways are opposite to our earthly approaches. Since most of us grew up in the worldly business system, His approach sounds different from what we have been taught and observed.

There are three basic principles of doing business God’s way.

The first principle is that no debt is needed to develop and run your business—ifyou use God’s way.

When He reveals the dream of a business adventure to you, He will put the tools and resources in your hands to make it happen. No doubt about it.

The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall NOT borrow.

(Deuteronomy 28:12 NKJV)

When we take a business loan without any personal guarantee, we are not operating in the blessing of God, according to Deuteronomy 28:12. In fact, there are no scriptures within the Bible in which God commands someone to take a loan based on His direction.

The second principle tells us we must not neglect family for business.

Father working on laptop - Doing business God's way

With this principle we need to define the word “family.” According to Dictionary.com, (2014) “the family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not: the traditional family.”

In today’s modern society, the family has undergone significant transformations in its structure. The family is a social unit and can be described as “nuclear” if residing in the same household.

God wants to impart on us a clear understanding of His authority and His plan for us. He chose to reveal Himself and the clear purpose of His will in our soul.

Having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself.

(Ephesians 1:9, NKJV)

Through Jesus, the Word made flesh; we have access to the Father and can share in the divine nature of the Holy Spirit. Through this revelation, therefore, God out of the abundance of His love speaks to men as friends (John 15:14-15) and lives among them, so He may invite and take them into fellowship with Himself.

By this revelation then, the deepest truth about God and the salvation of man shines out for our sake in Jesus, who both are the mediator and the fullness of all revelation.

The traditional structure of a family is crucial to other universal laws, human cornerstone principles, and teachings in the Bible. It is also important to understand what God wants from us to glorify Him, and not the family.

As you glorify Him and offer Him everything you do, He will pour blessings to you to overflow and pass into your family and future generations.

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behaviour, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence.

(1 Timothy 3:1-4 NKJV)

1 Timothy 3:1-4 applies directly to Christian entrepreneurs who want to do business God’s way, because we are overseers of God’s works in business on this Earth.

If God has given you the vision to start or expand a business, the business you start is His work, and you are the overseer, or as we call it in the business world, the Chief Executive Officer.

If you neglect your family in time, space, and support, your life will not be successful.

The third and last principle in doing business God’s way is remembering not to labour to be rich in business.

Then, how do we make it?

Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease!

(Proverbs 23:4 NKJV)

How, as a new business owner, can you become successful without working hard? Well, let’s first look at the definition of working.

It is defined as the physical, mental and spiritual work causing you extreme fatigue and frustration.

What I want you to focus on is fatigue and frustration. When you are working according to this definition (and the usage of this word in the Proverbs 23:4), the production of that work comes at the price of fatigue and frustration. It makes us feel devastated, as if we’ll never see the light at the end of the tunnel.

While working in our new business to be successful, according to Proverbs 23:4, we are leaning on our free will and ego instead of on God’s wisdom.

DOING BUSINESS GOD’S WAY

However, if you are connected with God, the Holy Spirit that lives inside of you will direct and guide you to focus and see success and prosperity with purpose.

As you trust God more and more each day to guide you in your business, declare boldly His word, meditate on His promises, listen to Him, expect natural and supernatural events in your life, and put Him first because your business should be done by His will.

In your prayer, be bold for God and confess with your mouth, soul and mind that you know with Him all things are possible. Tell Him every day you choose to stand solid in faith, that you trust Him, and you choose to receive every blessing He has for you.

Blessed be it! In the name of His son Jesus, you are asking, you are expecting, and thanking Him because you are receiving. Amen!

Breaking the Spirit of Poverty

Having a relationship with Jesus certainly doesn’t mean we’ll be free of problems or struggles. Life can be tough, and even as Christians, we’ll face many challenges.

Before we were saved, we were no threat to the devil. But when we accepted Jesus into our heart, something changed. We took up a new residence in the spiritual battlefield and immediately became an enemy of Satan.

Many of our battles, struggles, and trials in life are rooted in the spiritual realm. As a result, war must be waged on the spiritual battlefield and fought with spiritual weapons.

Overcoming poverty is one example of this principle. Jesus taught us that the devil is a THIEF who comes to steal and destroy God’s blessings in our life (John 10:10). Many Christians unnecessarily suffer financial lack simply because they don’t understand the nature of the spiritual battle they’re in.

Your Father’s Blessings

God is a good God. Our Heavenly Father wants to bless us, and He would never send us into battle unequipped. He has given us His Word as “the sword of the Spirit” to overcome the lies of the enemy (Ephesians 6:17). Something happens when we put the Scriptures in our heart and mouth and begin to point them at the enemy.

Remember, victory over poverty is already yours. Through His death on the Cross and His Resurrection, Jesus has destroyed ALL “the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). But now He calls on you to enforce that victory by declaring His promises over your life.

The Apostle Paul wrote that “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). Through the truth of God’s Word, you have been given dominion over financial lack and every other stronghold in your life. So go ahead and let the enemy know he no longer has permission to harass you!

Defeating Satan’s Lies

Scripture tells us that the devil is “the father of lies” (John 8:44). Many Christians have believed the lie that God wants them to experience lack instead of abundance. Yet God wants to replace that lie with the truth that He wants you to PROSPER and be in health (3 John 1:2)!

If you’re a child of God, the devil has no rights in your life. But you must move into an offensive position and take back anything the enemy has stolen. Boldly speak to your circumstances, reminding them that you are a child of the King and a joint heir with Christ. Your words create your realities, so make sure they line up with God’s Word.

Don’t stop pressing in until you experience the victory you’ve been promised. Make sure you are taking steps of faith—Sowing financial Seeds in anticipation of God’s abundant Harvests in your life.

In Jesus’ name, you have power over the devil, but he’s not going to give up without a fight. You must realize the authority God has given you and lay an ax to the roots of poverty and financial lack.

May God awaken the mighty warrior inside of you, so you can pull down strongholds in your own life and then go to battle on behalf of your loved ones.

How Do I Get Out of Poverty and Debt?

Poverty is a lack of money or material possessions. Poverty is usually accompanied by debt obligations to others. Debt, whether or not associated with poverty, is a form of slavery. Following God’s principles will break the hold of both poverty and debt.

How to overcome the spirit of poverty

First of all, you must commit yourself, your finances, your family, and your life to Jesus Christ. Agree to live by God’s principles and seek to know what He has to say to you in your situation. Be absolutely honest about the faults and mistakes in your life, past or present, that may have caused your problem of debt. To escape trouble, you must know what put you there.

How to overcome the spirit of poverty

Second, do everything you can to understand God’s principles. The Bible says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). There are many Christians who have no concept whatsoever of the principles of God’s kingdom. They understand neither God’s laws dealing with material prosperity nor their own privileges as children of God. So, for lack of knowledge, they suffer.

People in debt or in poverty especially need to understand a rule of God’s kingdom that I call the Law of Reciprocity. This is a law of cause and effect, of action and reaction. In the area of money, the law is simple: “Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). When a person begins to give to God’s work and to the poor and less fortunate, God begins to give back to him. Regardless of the debt burden, a person should give a very minimum of 10 percent of his income to the Lord. Even if you are at a poverty-level income, you have something you can give to God. Start where you are. Reach out in compassion to those less fortunate than yourself. As a first priority, get into a position to give love, time, energy, and money to other people even if it is only a little bit.

How to overcome the spirit of poverty

Next, set up a realistic budget. Most people do not have budgets, and their spending has neither plan nor control. Whatever your income level, you should set up a budget that includes one or more tithes plus offerings to the Lord, which may be in the form of aid to those who are less fortunate (see Malachi 3:10). After setting aside your tithe, establish a realistic plan to pay off your debts. Go to your creditors and obtain an agreement that they will accept your payment schedule. Make it understood that you cannot pay any more than a certain amount, and they will almost always accept your plan.

Once you have done that, you have to resolve in your mind that there will be no more accumulation of debt. You cannot go back to living beyond your means. Make a vow to God that you will not buy anything on credit, and that your lifestyle will be curtailed to fit your income. This takes a definite mental and spiritual commitment. It may take a year, or two years, or five years, but you are going to get out of debt.

It has been suggested by a very wise businessman that part of any budget should go for recreation. There should be some time each month when the family can get away from the pressures of life. Maybe it can be a picnic in the park, a fishing trip, or possibly a night away from home in a motel or resort. Recreation includes anything to get away from the constant pressure and to allow your mind to be recreated in God.

Along with recreation, I recommend a Sabbath rest. You cannot work seven days a week. There must be one day a week that is dedicated to God, to thinking about Him, praying to Him, studying the Bible, and resting. All of these things are necessary to prepare your mind and spirit to win the battle.

Then, with all of these things going for you, you need a renewed faith in God. He is the source. As you give to Him and trust Him, God will begin to take you from bondage to debt into His blessings. He will open doors for you and will give you concepts and ideas to help you overcome your situation. You must believe this and expectantly look for His answer rather than to some other person as your source. God is your source.

How to overcome the spirit of poverty

Every day, speak words of confidence. Say out loud that you are going to be free from debt and that God is going to put you in a different position. Memorize scripture verses where God says things such as, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash heap, to set them among princes” (1 Samuel 2:8). Speak these words over and over again, confidently, knowing that God can do all things and do them well.

With that frame of mind, you should be on your way. It may take a year to pay off your debts. In the instances that I know of, the average was about eighteen months. But it may take three, four, or even five years. You will win the battle if you use the weapons that God has made available to you! You can be debt free!

Jesus The Creative Word

John 1:9-13 – Receiving Jesus

John 1:9-13 – Receiving Jesus

John
John 1:9-13 – Receiving Jesus

John 1:9-13 HCSB The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. (10) He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him. (11) He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. (12) But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, (13) who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

The fallen world order does not acknowledge or receive Christ and the New Testament, and particularly Paul gives us a variety of reasons such as: own fleshly inclinations, wrong teaching, our fallen nature, the Devil’s blinding of the heart, Jewish legalism, cultural and spiritual strongholds, and human ignorance, pride and folly. I have listed some verses on this topic below:

WHY PEOPLE REFUSE TO RECEIVE CHRIST

Romans 8:7 HCSB For the mind-set of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit itself to God’s law, for it is unable to do so.

1 Corinthians 1:18-25 HCSB (18) For to those who are perishing the message of the cross is foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is God’s power.

1 Corinthians 2:14 HCSB (14) But the natural man does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to know it since it is evaluated spiritually.

2 Corinthians 3:14 HCSB (14) But their minds were closed. For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set-aside only in Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 HCSB (3) But if, in fact, our gospel is veiled; it is veiled to those who are perishing. (4) Regarding them: the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 HCSB (4) since the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments (5) and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Ephesians 2:1-3 HCSB And you were dead in your trespasses and sins (2) in which you previously walked according to this worldly age, according to the ruler of the atmospheric domain, the spirit now working in the disobedient. (3) We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and by nature we were children under wrath, as the others were also.

Ephesians 4:17-18 HCSB Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their thoughts. (18) They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts.

Colossians 1:21 HCSB And you were once alienated and hostile in mind because of your evil actions.

This is a convincing enough lists of verses – some folks are perishing in stubborn unbelief and spiritual blindness. Such people need a lot of patient prayer and witnessing if they ever are to believe. I was an anti-Christian atheist prior to being saved and many thought I could not be saved – but nevertheless God “got me”.

Yet we need to put an end to Pollyanna views such as: “If we just preach the gospel everyone will believe.” If Jesus Himself could not get everyone to believe, even with all the miracles He performed and His wisdom, love and grace – then we need to accept that this is “something fundamental” in humanity. In fact there are almost two types of people “those who are perishing” and “those who are being saved” and it is seems that it is with difficulty that many of those who are perishing find Christ.

One reason that the world does not acknowledge Christ because the “ruler of this world” is the Devil (1 John 5:18,19) and he has absolutely zero intention of letting this world be released into the freedom of the sons of God. (Romans 8:19-25)

Therefore intercession and spiritual warfare must precede evangelism if the Devil’s grip on fallen humanity is to be broken. Much prevailing prayer has preceded every great revival – (see Dr. Stewart Robinson’s excellent review article Praying the Price of Revival http://aibi.gospelcom.net/prayer/payprice.htm) and here is a link on Prayer Evangelism: http://aibi.gospelcom.net/articles/prayer_evangelism.htm

The natural human mind is not a level playing field. It does not naturally think the thoughts that accompany salvation. It rushes into folly and gossip and pornography and tabloid rubbish and totally ignores, ridicules and dismisses the deep things of God.

Humanism, which almost deifies the natural human intellect, is without a good explanation for the lust, cruelty, evil, folly, and madness of humanity. Humanism can never properly explain Auschwitz or Rwanda or the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The world did not acknowledge Jesus, His own received Him not, yet some did believe and He gave them the power to become sons of God. That is the power to be eternal beings of great glory and authority.

The basis of this sonship is being “born of God”, that is a spiritual birth that comes from God, not a literal or physical birth from mankind or the human will (see John 3:1-18). In the new birth we are born as eternal spiritual beings, who are citizens of Heaven (Ephesians 2:19, Philippians 3:20), and are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6, 1:20).

The world can give us all sorts of other powers – the power to earn money or the power to be famous or the power to rule nations, but only Jesus Christ can give us the eternal and holy power that will last forever, the power to become a son of God.

Miracle Money – How to receive miracles

Miracle Money – How to receive miracles

Miracle Money is a vital topic that is recurrent in Christianity and a largely misunderstood one for that matter. This article is however not written to create another arguement on Miracle Money – there are too many already. But note that your level of understanding of any biblical concept determines your experience. I believe in seeing a cup as half full rather than half empty. Hence, the scripture says, ”with God, ALL THINGS are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

New: 7 Gross Misconceptions About Money.

Miracle Money then is very much possible. My prayer is that your faith will be stirred and released to produce miracles in every area of your life and not just miracle money as you go through this article.

Miracle Money

Miracle Money
Miracle Money

Many questions often come to my mind when I see people bluntly refuseing to believe in the possibilities of God – the God who made Elizabeth who was called barren fruitful; who made barren Sarah the mother of many nations and the list continues. Why is it so easy for you to believe that Philip and John disappeared and appeared elsewhere in the Bible than it is to believe that God can cause money to appaer in your bank account if He wills so? Why do men condition God and determine the way He oughts to act?

There are many instances of miracle money in the Bible besides those of Elisha and Elijah with the two women but I will like to focus on Jesus Christ taking into consideration the present dispensation of grace (in case you are reading this before the rapture).

The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth

A glaring instant of miracle money is the apparition of the coin in the fish’s mouth.

You need to truly understand why God may choose to perform miracle money.

The miracle of the coin found in the fish’s mouth (miracle money) (Matthew 17:24-27) may be among the least dramatic of Christ’s miracles, but it is certainly instructive. The context involves the paying of the Temple tax, and not surprisingly, only Matthew, the former tax collector for Rome, reports it. Although he did not collect this particular tax, it still interested him. His account of Christ’s life tends to highlight the King and His Kingdom. Why, then, should the King be subject to a tax? Is He not the Son of God, the Heir of all His Father’s house?

Coming to Capernaum, the tax collector asks Simon Peter, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?” and Peter replies in the affirmative (verses 24-25). This tax was not a Roman civil tax but a religious one supporting the Temple in Jerusalem. God inaugurated this tax in the wilderness, instructing Moses to take a half shekel from every male twenty years and older (Exodus 30:11-16). It provided for the work of the Tabernacle and later of the Temple, including during the time of Christ. This tax was not an evil one per se, helping to cover legitimate costs of the worship of God, but as with almost all taxation, the money was often misused.

1. Does Peter err in how he answers? Matthew 17:25, 27.

Comment:

Peter appears concerned that Jesus would not be esteemed a good Jew if He did not pay the tax. Not wanting to bring dishonor and danger on Him, he acknowledges Jesus’ liability to pay the taxes as if He were a mere son of Israel. His reply implies that Jesus had paid the tax and would continue to do as every devout Jew should. When Peter enters the house, Jesus immediately asks him about taxation: “From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?” This demonstration of Christ’s knowing what Peter had discussed elsewhere proves to the disciple that His divine omniscience is not limited by distance.

Peter answers the question with the only possible answer, “From strangers,” and Jesus replies, “Then the sons are free.” He refers to Peter and Himself as both sons of the Father, the Sovereign of the Temple, and therefore, free from the tax. However, rather than cause offense, Jesus arranges for the money to be found in a most miraculous way.

Technically, Peter errs about the legality of taxing the Son of God, but Jesus uses the principle of not needlessly offending a brother (Luke 17:1-2) to positively express His divinity and spiritual power: He performs miracle money miracle. Christ is so considerate that He would rather pay any amount, however unjust or objectionable, than endanger God’s work by unnecessarily provoking negative comments that would hurt its credibility, saying, “lest we offend them” (Matthew 17:27). His example should inspire us for when we feel slighted or taken advantage of (Romans 14:21-22).

miracle money

2. How much control over the situation does Christ demonstrate? How precise is this miracle? Matthew 17:27.

Comment:

Jesus’ miracle of miracle money consists, not only in His omniscience—knowing that the fish would yield the necessary money—but also in the fact that the first fish that took Peter’s hook contained the precise sum required. The purpose and pleasure of Christ’s will—which all creation obeys—guided that single fish out of multiple schools in the lake to Peter’s hook. Christ, the Lord of Creation, controls all things, even the sea’s fish and the earth’s silver.

In describing Christ as the Word, the apostle John writes, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3). Paul confirms this in Colossians 1:16, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Using His spiritual power, He makes a fish produce the exact amount of silver coin to pay the Temple dues. This miracle reminds the disciples that He is indeed the omnipotent Son of God who controls all creation.

God can perform miracle money in your life as a way to show you that He is your Provider – that He cares for you. He could also perform miracle money to lift up your faith.

miracle money
miracle money

3. How carefully conceived is this miracle of miracle money? How does Jesus view His relationship with His disciples? Matthew 17:24, 27.

Comment:

The Greek word behind “tax” (NKJV) or “tribute” (KJV) in verse 24 is didrachma, equivalent to the Jewish “half-shekel,” the Temple rate paid by every male Israelite above age twenty. Those responsible for collecting these half-shekels came to Peter. Unlike tolls, which were duties on goods, the Temple tax was levied on individual Israelites. The collected money, paid into the Temple treasury, defrayed the cost of Temple services. The Jews were much more willing to accept this collection than to pay the despised publicans who extracted taxes for Rome.

The miracle’s preciseness is seen in the coin found in the fish’s mouth, a full shekel (two didrachmas)—half a shekel each for Christ and Peter (“for Me and you”; verse 27)—the exact amount to satisfy the requirement. In this way, Jesus puts Himself alongside Peter as sharing His position and relationship as a son of the Kingdom. All true Christians fill this amazing position: They are no longer servants, but sons in Christ (Galatians 3:26). With His brethren Jesus shares His family relationship to His Father (John 20:17).

This account contains two principles. The first is doctrinal, teaching Jesus’ place in God’s Kingdom as the rightful Son. The second is moral, showing that greatness in the Kingdom derives from service and humility. Jesus’ phrase, “lest we offend them,” should motivate us to employ meekness and wisdom.

Unusual Harvest

An Unusual Seed Provokes An Unusual Harvest

An Unusual Seed Provokes An Unusual Harvest. The Word of God tells us that the God we serve is moved when He sees His children do the unusual in faith. In fact, the Bible is filled with accounts of men and women who did the unusual to move the hand of God. An unusual seed provokes an unusual harvest. Show me an unusually prosperous person in the Bible and I will show you an unusual seed sower.

Think of Job!

Job 1:1-10 King James Version (KJV)

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

The Bible clearly shows that Job wasn’t just a giver but an unusual seed sower who called forth an unusual harvest.

Job 29:11-17 (NIV)

11 Whoever heard me spoke well of me,
and those who saw me commended me,
12 because I rescued the poor who cried for help,
and the fatherless who had none to assist them.
13 The one who was dying blessed me;
I made the widow’s heart sing.
14 I put on righteousness as my clothing;
justice was my robe and my turban.
15 I was eyes to the blind
and feet to the lame.
16 I was a father to the needy;
I took up the case of the stranger.
17 I broke the fangs of the wicked
and snatched the victims from their teeth.

The Unusual Seed Brings Prosperity in Austerity

Noah, for example, lived on the earth at a time when there was absolutely no rain. None! Since the day God created the earth, it had not rained, nor had there been any floods. Yet the time came when God told Noah that it was going to rain and that He was going to destroy the wicked with a flood. Noah, at that moment, did the unusual. In obedience to God, he and his sons began building the ark, even as the wicked mocked and ridiculed them. The usual would have been to ignore God’s command, since rain had not been seen since creation. But Noah did the unusual and, as a result, brought salvation to his household. David is another example. When facing Goliath, he did the unusual. The army of Israel had been defied by the giant. Thousands of men stood in fear of Goliath. None knew what to do. That is the usual response. But David came, obeying the Lord, never doubting for one moment that God would give him the victory.

He defeated Goliath because he was willing to do the unusual. How about Mary, the mother of our Lord? She was told by the angel Gabriel that she would become the mother of the Son of God. The usual would have been not to believe. The usual would have been to worry about what Joseph would think. What would the neighbors think? What would they do to her? By law, they would have had to stone her. But she did the unusual. She believed God. What about the apostles who did the unusual in disobeying the rulers of Israel? After the Day of Pentecost, as they began preaching the Gospel, they were commanded by the authorities not to preach in the name of Jesus. Preaching in His name would have meant prison—would have meant persecution and maybe even death. But the apostles did the unusual and obeyed God instead.

God Is Calling Us to Do the Unusual

I am more convinced than ever that a very unusual, prophetic hour is near. We are already seeing this in our Miracle Healing Services. We are simply getting out of the way and letting God move mightily. As a result, lives are being changed dramatically! God is also calling believers into an unusual time of harvest. Truly,

“the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just” (Proverbs 13:22).

It is time that you and I begin to do the unusual for our glorious Lord and King, for He does not respond to the usual. He only responds to the unusual. The widow of Zarephath (as recorded in 1 Kings 17) stepped out in faith and gave Elijah her last meal. She did the unusual and was sustained.
